Next MMM: Tuesday September 6, 2005 - NFC PREVIEW w/ PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS!

AFC

Once again the AFC is stacked with good teams this year. On paper no less than 6-8 teams have legitimate arguments about going to the Super Bowl in Detroit.

AFC East

1. New York Jets
Record: 11-5
I just can't do too many previews and predictions without throwing in a few curveballs. The NFL is usually unpredictable but after last years preseason favorites went to the Super Bowl, I expect this year to be predictable in it's unpredictableness. Whatever that means. I'll start off by saying the Pats will not win the division and the Jets are the heir apparent. Chad Pennington is healthy after offseason shoulder surgery. Last years conservative offensive coordinator Paul Hackett was replaced by highly regarded yet still conservative (by this writer at least) ex-Titan offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger. The difference is Heimerdinger goes for TD's in the red zone a lot more than Hackett. Herm Edwards really scares me as he's probably the worst coach at in game time management otherwise I'd be saying 13-3. The secondary minus Law is the only weakness on an otherwise Super Bowl contender though. Look next week to see if this is the team I have coming out of the AFC.

2. New England Patriots
Record: 9-7
This could come back to bite me. But I watched a lot of New England the last 4 years, and every game Tedy Bruschi was making a big play or two. I just can't overcome that fact. The losses of both their coordinators has to take a toll also. If the argument is Bill Parcells has never won a Super Bowl without Bill Belichick, then Belichick has never won a Super Bowl without Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennell! That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Corey Dillon comes down to Earth, and possibly a breakout season for David Givens.

3. Buffalo Bills
Record: 7-9
J.P. Losman takes over at QB and there could be some learning curves and bumbs along the way. Willis McGahee has blossomed into a stud RB and WR Lee Evans is ready to breakout. But the Bills may take a Bengals like "step back before taking another step forward". This young team will be very good in 2006 Gas long as Losman develops as he should.

4. Miami Dolphins
Record: 5-11
Gus Frerotte is the starter. Ricky Williams is out for the first four games. New head coach Nick Saban will probably start the "weeding" out process to find his type of playing. Look for this team to be a pest late in the year and possibly be a spoiler against someone.

AFC North

1. Baltimore Ravens
Record: 11-5
This team relies on two very good things to win. Running the ball with Jamal Lewis and defense. Over the course of a long season the Ravens will win their games as long as they continue to pound Jamal Lewis. The defense is led by the best defensive player in football. Ray...NOT...The best defensive player in the NFL is Ed Reed. He's all over the field and makes big plays consistently. Kyle Boller or Anthony Wright will be a big question all year in Baltimore. I have a problem with this defense post-Super Bowl though, as they seem to come up small in big spots, so you'll have to wait until next week to see if I pick them to go all the way.

2. Cincinnati Bengals
Record: 9-7
I really want to love the Bengals more but this defense just scares me. The offense is awesome. Carson Palmer should take another big step forward while throwing to TJ and Chad Johnson. This team has the potential to win the division, but I just can't predict it.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers
Record: 8-8
Too many things went right for the Steelers last year. Duce gets hurt, Bettis turns 24 again. Maddox gets hurt, the rookie Ben Roethlisberger fills in and plays great (don't let his stats fool you, he played great in the regular season). A big loss to this team as I see it is Plaxico Burress. He really stretched the field for the running game and Hines Ward. The defense will feel the loss of Kendrell Bell, and I just don't see James Farrior having as big of a season as he did last year. Watch out for Willie Parker - could steal a lot of carries from Duce & Bus and is going to break out this year.

4. Cleveland Browns
Record: 5-11
And starting at QB......Trent Dilfer! Just a mess of a team but GM Phil Savage has already done a nice roster turnaround.

AFC South

1. Indianapolis Colts
Record: 11-5
Everyone knows the deal by now. Great offense, bad defense. The only way this formula wins a Super Bowl is if you turn that into an incredibly awesome offense and an average defense. I think they're very close to being an average defense. If this team gets home field, nobody's stopping them from Detroit. You'll have to wait until next week. Picking Peyton Manning is painful for me so this decision is really going to be difficult.

2. Jacksonville Jaguars
Record: 10-6
This young team can flat out play. Jack Del Rio's team is young and has an awesome defense. This is a playoff team any way you shake it. If Byron Leftwich can emerge and find some WR's to throw the ball to, watch out this team can compete for the division.

3. Houston Texans
Record: 8-8
This team should be ready for a playoff push but is stuck in mediocrity. Andre Johnson is one of the best WR's in the game, and I really like David Carr. After that they have an inconsistent running game and a spotty defense. I wouldn't be surprised if they're in playoff contention most of the year though.

4. Tennessee Titans
Record: 7-9
This is a team that should go 3-13 this year. They're a debacle. But Jeff Fisher and Steve McNair will find a way to battle. The offense is surprisingly good, much better than I initially thought. The defense however is bad, much worse than I initially thought. Keith Bullock may have to make every tackle.

AFC West
1. Kansas City Chiefs
Record: 10-6
What impresses me about this team is how they finished last year. After an abysmal start to the season they battled all year and showed a lot of heart. This team loves playing for Dick Vermiel, I think they've got plenty of talent to compete on both offense and defense. Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson could have a combined 3,000 yards rushing, they're that good.

2. Denver Broncos
Record: 9-7
There's just something about this team that I like. The defense is improving and anyone who reads this knows I love Mike Shanahan. But you also know how much I dislike Jake Plummer. He's way too inconsistent for this team to advance very far.

3. San Diego Chargers
Record: 8-8
Too many things went right for the Chargers last year. The Steelers theory applies this year. Drew Brees was too good, and there's got to be rumblings of Phillip Rivers. LT is the best running back in the game in my opinion, but that's not going to be enough.

4. Oakland Raiders
Record: 7-9
No. That's the only word I can use. No. Kerry Collins is a nice QB but he turns the ball over way too much for this team to win. Randy Moss and Jerry Porter will be awesome, but the defense won't be. They'll be exciting but come up short.

NEXT WEEK: PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS!

MLB/Phillies

After a disappointing 3-3 West Coast trip, the Phillies have begin their defining moment of the season (every series the rest of the way is the most important series) as they take on Wild Card rivals New York Mets and the Washington Nationals.

Positives:

- Jon Lieber doesn't stink anymore. I don't know what happened to Lieber for about a month or so, but he's definitely pitching much better.

- Bullpen. This sometimes overworked bullpen is phenomenal right now. Guys like Aquilino Lopez, Eude Brito, and Aaron Fultz have been great. Billy Wagner has been lights out for about 3 months now.

- Middle of the order: Chase Utley, Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell. They've been playing very consistently lately.

Negatives:

- Rheal Cormier. Imagine if you could go back into time, and replace every Cormier pitched game and replace it with Aaron Fultz. And then replace 95% of David Bell's AB's since June with Placido Polanco? How many more wins would the Phillies have?

- Starting Pitchers starting to crumble. Cory Lidle, who was terrible goes on the DL. He'll be replaced by Robinson Tejeda which is probably a good thing. But they can't afford to lose any more pitchers.

Overall, this team is playing slightly above average. The problem is, the Houston Astros are playing below average and have given up control of the Wild Card. I think it still will come down to the Astros and the Marlins in the end.

Around the MLB

The Wild Card is heating up great in the AL. The AL East once again will be a showdown between the Yankees and Red Sox.

There isn't a better pitcher in baseball than Johan Santana. Well, besides the inhuman Roger Clemens.

How is Todd Jones lights out for the Marlins? Someone please explain to me how the guy couldn't get a guy out to save his life last year, and now he's lights out.

There's rumors of Ken Griffey Jr. being traded to the Chicago White Sox. With the way he's been playing this year, which is they way he was playing in the late 90's, that could really shift the balance of power to the White Sox in the AL. The White Sox still have Dustin Hermanson as their closer though (his ERA is 1.68!).

NHL Week in Review By: Ed Wasser

- I was watching Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock being interviewed on Comcast and he was relaying his experiences from some of the NHL scrimmages in Canada. It was a lot of the NHLers first experience with the new rules. The word Hitchcock kept using over and over again was "chaos". A lot of up and down fast breaking action. Also, Martin Broduer was the only goalie that thought to bring the new smaller goalie equipment. Hitchcock said Broduer looked significantly smaller in the net. This should be an interesting year.

- What the hell are the Atlanta Thrashers thinking? I was looking at this grid in the Hockey News last week that had various league wide ticket prices over the last few years. I'm looking at the ticket prices for all the teams in the league and generally checking out how drastically the teams have cut prices for this year. I was a little disappointed that a few teams (Vancouver, New Jersey, NY Islanders, Minnesota, Detroit, Edmonton) kept their ticket prices the same. The Calgary Flames kept their prices the same but it's hard to complain about them because they've had the lowest average ticket prices in the league for years. You can see a Flames game for $13.48. Of course you're in the rafters but what do you expect for $13.48? So I get to the Thrashers; they RAISED ticket prices an average of 4% across the board. Yes I know, 4% is nothing, but it's like they say in Goodfellas "you gotta keep up appearances!!" You mean to tell me that Ted Turner needs that 4% that bad? Just a stupid move.

- The Chicago Blackhawks hired ex-Olympic speed skating gold medalist Dan Jansen to teach skating. Jansen was interviewed by ESPN News about the hiring. So I watched the interview and it was really interesting. The interviewer asked Jansen how exactly do you "teach" skating to professional hockey players. Jansen said "99% of the guys that come into the NHL derive all their skating power from their legs, they shouldn't. These guys can only last a minute or so on the ice during a shift before fatigue sets in. This makes no sense because these guys can run at least 5 miles at a fast clip so they should be able to skate at break neck speed for a few minutes at least before getting tired. Skating power should come from your core. It's about transferring weight, long strides, even proper breathing". You could tell Jansen was passionate about the subject and that he knows his stuff. It's a shame he has to work for a Mickey Mouse franchise like the Blackhawks.

- I know everyone's dying to hear my opinion of the new show 'Tommy Lee Goes To College'. Well my review is three words long...dead on arrival. Here's the problem, Tommy met with the dean of the school 30 seconds into the first episode and the dean told that he couldn't drink on campus and there was to be no canoodling with coeds. Well then what's the point of this show? Isn't that why we want to see Tommy Lee in college? I don't know about you but I wanted to see Tommy roll into a frat party, drink the frat kids under the table, then take home like 3 cheerleaders. And the next day do it again like it was the Dr. Feelgood tour.

- Do you ever think that Sixers GM Billy King goes to work decked out from head to toe in a Santa Clause outfit? "HO HO HO!!! Merry Christmas everyone!!" (Enter Samuel Dalembert who sits on Billy Kings leg) "Hello little Sammy. What would you like for Christmas?" "Well Santa, I'd like a contract that's 6 years long for $58 million". "HO HO HO....well little Sammy have you been good this year?" "I was OK. I only averaged 6.9 points per game and my hands were terrible but I was pretty good defensively. And I'm sure I'll be good in the future!!" (Dalembert puts his head on Billy Santa King's shoulder) "I couldn't agree more!! HO HO HO!! Here's that contract Sammy!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!" "Thanks Santa!! You're the greatest!!!" (Dalembert leaves...Kyle Korver enters and sits on King's leg) "Merry Christmas little Kyle!!! What would you like for Christmas!?!?" "Well Santa, I'd like a contract that 6 years for $20 million". "HO HO HO!!!! Have you been good this year little Kyle?" "Well, on the court I was OK. But off the court I was a good soldier and always kept my mouth shut. And I never ever complained about playing time". "Agreed. And you know what little Kyle? Since you're such a nice little boy and even though you have no interest from any other teams in the league I'm going to give you $27 MILLION!!!" "OH BOY SANTA!!!! You're the bestest guy in the whole wide world!!!"

Sorry for the late send off but the PGA Championship takes precedence...

NEXT MMM: August 29th - AFC PREVIEW!

Phils/MLB

Phillies come off a great 5-1 west coast trip to pull within a half a game of the Houston Astros for the Wildcard race.

Positives:
- Vicente Padilla and Robinson Tejeda. Padilla has gone 7 innings or more in his last 3 starts and has has 7 straight quality starts (6 IP w/ less than 3 ER). Tejeda has only given up 6 ER in his last 5 starts, and is now looking like he can pitch past the 5th or 6th inning.

- Great road trips by Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell. Abreu hit .333 with an OB% of .481, 1 HR, 3 RBI's, and 7 runs scored. Burrell hit .364 with 2 HR's and 10 RBI's. Abreu got on and Burrell knocked him in alot on this trip.

- Ryan Howard has been awesome at times. Howard's grand slam off a struggling Dodgers ex-closer Yhencey Brazobran was the highlight of the week. Still, 50 K's in 158 AB's is going to hurt him in the long run.

Negatives:
I am still skeptical even though the Phillies are only one half games out of first for the following reasons:

- They just beat up on a couple of bad teams and for some reason, the Phils just pound the West (19-6). The Phils are still 20-26 against the teams in their own division, who they will play alot in September.

- I just don't believe in this starting rotation. There is no guy who can be trusted for 8 innings and 1 or 2 runs in 3 or 4 straight starts. We do have 6 inning and 3 run guys though which will keep up contending.

- (Insert broken record) Inconsistency at the top of the lineup. You won't score runs at a consistent enough pace with the Phils leadoff hitter. Notice how Chase Utley's RBI production has taken a nose dive since being put into the # 3 hole? It's a lot easier to drive in runs with Abreu (.409 OB%) and Burrell (.385 OB%) in front of you than it is when you have the top of the Phils order.

- This is something I've been thinking about lately, the Phillies have no identity. They're not a great hitting team, they're not a great pitching team, what are they? The Braves have an identity (pitching & being able to plug guys in anywhere). The Cards have an identity (hitting, Pujols, and consistent pitching). The Astros have an identity (Pettitte, Oswalt, Clemens, Lidge). The Phils just aren't that good.

Overall, I still think this team will stay in the race, just like 2003 until the end and I still see them falling short.

Around the League

- There's one player who is going completely gone berserk. 21 year old Jeff Francoeur of the Atlanta Braves is absolutely insane right now. The guy swings at everything and is hitting the ball like a maniac. In 102 AB's for the Braves, he's hitting .382 with 9 HR's and 26 RBI's. What makes it more amazing is that he has not walked one single time. Not once! Want more? He's got 8 outfield assists in 24 games which puts him only 2 behind the league leaders. I'm sure pitchers will catch up to him soon, but this is ridiculous.

- In the AL, it looks as if we're going to have 4 teams battling for 3 spots. The Red Sox and Yankees will battle it out for the AL East, while the Angels and A's battle it out once again for the AL West. One of those teams will be on the outside looking in though.

- The Houston Astros missed a gold opportunity this week as they only went 3-3 vs. some weak teams, including losing 2 out of 3 at home to the Pirates. The offense is still an issue in Houston.

Eagles

I'm really trying hard not to get too involved in the whole Terrell Owens fiasco but it's really hard not to. Even I don't even want to venture a guess as to how this is going to end up. I do wonder what will happen though if Owens steps onto the field as an Eagle and performs like he did early in the season last year. If he catches 6 or 7 TD's in the first 4 weeks, the fans will immediately jump back onto his side (how about a game winning TD on MNF to start the season?).

I just want the games to start so we can stop hearing about this over and over again (yes, I'm in denial that this won't be an issue all season long).

PGA Championship

Phil Mickleson wins his second major of the year on a birdie on the 18th hole, just minutes ago. I was not impressed at all with the way Mickleson played on Saturday or Sunday (+4 in the final 2 rounds). He continues to play well when Tiger isn't in contention (Thursday and Friday) and not play well when Tiger is in contention (Saturday and Sunday). Still, this is his second career major and he deserves credit for that. He's going to have to beat Tiger when they're playing head to head for me to be a believer, Phil's got way too much choking in him for me.

I went to the PGA on Friday and here are some observations:

- I've been to a Super Bowl (2002 - Patriots victory over Rams - Adam Vinateri's kick), been to an NBA Finals game (2003 - Nets vs. Lakers), and have been to a World Series (2003 Yankees vs. Marlins). This was the at least on par with those events, and I think because of the length of the event and the closeness you are to the action, it may even be better.

- Sergio Garcia kills the ball. His drives have another gear to them.

- I was shocked at how high Vijay Singh, John Daly, Fred Couples, etc tee up the ball.

- I stink at golf.

- Tiger Woods was 3 shots away from winning the grand slam.

- Adam Scott wins a major in the next 5 years.

- Paul Azinger has an awesome short game.

- John Daly drives are funny to watch. He's consistently 25 yards further than even the long hitters.

NHL Week in Review By: Ed Wasser

- I wasn't even going to write the article this week because nothing was really jumping out at me. Some weeks are like that. Then I read that the Panthers signed ex-Flyers stiff Chris Gratton. Huh? I knew he was very high on the Rangers hit list and now he's on the Panthers. How'd that happen? Salary cap or no salary cap how do the Rangers get out bid by the Panthers for a player? Then I heard Al Morganti on Comcast say "when is Glen Sather going to get off the golf course and do some work?" So I looked at the Rangers roster. It's a mess. And the window for buying out contracts has closed so now they're stuck with guys like Darius Kasparaitus (33 years old), Martin Rucinsky (34 years old), and what's going on with Bobby Holik and Mark Messier? I know some people get fed up with me always writing about the Rangers and to that I say, you've read this far so you might as well finish, but now the Rangers beyond sad. I'm starting to cross over from hating the Rangers to just thinking they're just incredibly inept and pathetic. And between the Rangers and Knicks how is Cablevision chairman James Dolan able to walk the streets of New York City without fear of being beat up?

- The Leafs signed Eric Lindros to a one year, incentive laddened contract worth $1.5 million. Or roughly the same money Flyers goon Donald Brashear makes. Of course one of those monetary incentives is for games played so you can expect Lindros to play like he has a dozen eggs in his uniform like he did three years ago for the Rangers. And don't think the press in Toronto won't take notice and tear him to shreds. This is gonna be good.

- I can not believe it but word on the street is that Flyers season tickets and multiple game packages are selling like hot cakes. And word is that tickets are selling great league wide. What can I say...I'm stunned. I thought the league would suffer a public relations hit like baseball did in 1995 but it appears like it's not, at least in terms of ticket sales. But of course the NHL is doing their best to screw it up. Looks like they are about to sign the deal with Comcast. Or more specifically The Outdoor Life network. Remember when the NHL signed a deal with Sports Channel long about 1985? Allright, I know you don't remember. They were on a network with only half the amount of households as ESPN just so they could get a few extra dollars. Nationally broadcast NHL games were almost nonexistent. I thought Comcast was going to create an NHL Network with this deal, that's why I thought it would be a nice deal for the NHL. It doesn't look like that's going to happen. So hockey will be shown nationwide on a network that mainly shows fly fishing and cycling.

- I've never seen a guy have a tour de force performance in a press conference like Donavan McNabb did last week. Obviously the focus was on Terrell Owens. McNabb took the high road about Owens but he was stern when it came to Owens bringing McNabb's family into this whole mess and was did a fantastic job blowing off Owens' "hypocrite" remark. I gained a whole new respect for McNabb.

- And speaking of Terrell Owens if you want to sock it to him in style go to www.foryouto.com and pick up an F.U.T.O. t-shirt.

Monday Morning Mehta 8/1/05

Edition # 126
August 1, 2005

NEXT MMM: August 15, 2005

Phils/MLB

Phillies come off of an as predicted 3-4 road trip which started off by getting swept by the red hot Houston Astros. The week was also important as the non-waiver trade deadline was Sunday at 4pm EST. The Phillies stood pat, we'll get to that later.

Positives:

- Brett Myers has gone through his rough patch and come out of it nicely. He needs to go a little deeper into games but he hasn't given up more than 3 ER in his last 6 starts.

- Jimmy Rollins. I'm about to say something nice about Rollins: He had a hit in each game of the road trip. Consistency and smarter plate discipline is all I've ever asked from Rollins, let's hope he keeps it up.

- Billy Wagner. He's really stepped it up a few notches the last month. Wagner hasn't given up a run in his first inning of work in over a month.

Negatives:

- What the heck is going on with Bobby Abreu? The all-star game has effected him drastically, as he's not the same player we've all grown to know and respect. Abreu has never been as streaky of a hitter as a Jim Edmonds, so this is definitely the worst funk of his career. The biggest thing that should tell you this is Abreu has gone 8 games without drawing a walk. He's just the same hitter right now, I'm confident this home stand will break him out of it.

- Jon Lieber. Just when you thought he'd put his troubles behind him, he gets tagged for NINE runs in one inning.

Overall I expect the Phils to tread water like the rest of the season. They're right on track to finish with 84 wins which doesn't get you into the playoffs (unless you reside in the NL West). What 84 wins does give is Ed Wade more excuses about how they "could've" made the playoffs if it weren't for Thome and Wolf's injuries.

The Phillies are mired in mediocrity and the front office is too dumb to do anything about it.

Trade Deadline

The non-waiver trade deadline passes with very little action. Don't let this fool you, I think they're still lots of trades that will happen in the next month. There are many players who will clear through waivers in the next few weeks and will be traded to contending teams. There really wasn't much to be had out there once the big three were taken off the block (AJ Burnett, Alfonzo Soriano and Manny Ramirez). Don't be surprised to see the Phils add a 5th starter and a bullpen guy in the coming weeks.

Around the MLB

The Houston Astros and the Oakland A's remain the hottest teams in baseball. They've had big turn arounds in the last 2 months and are each now in the drivers seat of the wild card race. Oakland is knocking on the Angels doorsteps which is something nobody expected 6 weeks ago. As I said last week, 6 weeks from now don't be surprised if Houston is knocking on the Cards doorstep.

What the heck's gotten into Jason Giambi? He's gotta be back on the juice...

The NL West is horrible. I don't even know what to say. The Giants are 5.5 games back. Is it possible that if Bonds returns in a few weeks they could make a run?

Watch out for the Florida Marlins. They've been playing well the last 2 weeks and Juan Pierre is looking healthy again. If Willis doesn't collapse as he has in prior years, watch out for them in wild card race.

Atlanta is about to bury the rest of the pack in the NL East. Great series next weekend, Atlanta visits the Cards at Busch Stadium for the final time.

Manny Ramirez, who was away from the Red Sox for a few days to clear his mind, came back to pinch hit yesterday in a tie game in the 8th inning. He was welcomed with one of the loudest standing ovations I've seen in a long time. He delivered with an RBI hit as usual. Fenway Park was going bonkers. Sean McDonough, the voice of NESN which broadcasts Sox games says "This has to be one of the greatest moments ever at Fenway Park". I have to admit, it was awesome theater, but seriously, c'mon, greatest moment at Fenway?? Calm down a bit Sean...

Eagles

The circus comes to Lehigh University today as the Eagles veterans are slated to report to training camp. Terrell Owens is likely to be on time but his presence will create a circus like environment the whole time. The Eagles had enormous crowds last year for camp, I can't even imagine what this year will be like.

I'll say this about Owens, why isn't the headline on SportsCenter about Hines Ward holding out? Please don't tell me it's been only one year for Owens, a contract is a contract.

Jerome McDougle was shot last Friday in the stomach, he'll be out 4 weeks. While that's probably worse news on a personal level, than on a football level, it just emphasizes what kind of crazy off season the Eagles have had. Corey Simon's probable holdout isn't even a blip on anyone's radar. This team always seems to face adversity, but this year it seems ridiculous. You'll have to wait and see if I think it will effect their play on the field though until the much anticipated MMM NFL Previews:

AFC Preview: August 29th
NFC Preview: September 6th

Golf

Since the next MMM is August 15th, I'll give my PGA pick. MMM will be at the PGA Championship which is at Baltrusol Golf Club in Springfield, NJ. I'll be attending the Friday session. It's a shame Michael Campbell had to screw things up otherwise Tiger would be going for history. The way Tiger is playing right now I don't think anyone can beat him in the majors. He'll be the clear favorite as usual. But we don't pick Tiger more than once, that'd be unfair.

The PGA is generally a major where the "lesser" players can sneak up and win one. Vijay Singh has had a great year to date and is the defending champ. A Tiger/Vijay showdown would be a great way to end the unofficial golf season (it really ends with the PGA).

Guys I think that'll play well: Sergio Garcia, Jim Furyk, and Adam Scott.

Winner: Chris DiMarco. He's been very good at the Masters and finished 2nd to Singh last year at the PGA. DiMarco's going to win a couple of majors before his career is over, and I think this is his start. He's put the choking behind him for the most part.

NHL Week in Review By: Ed Wasser

- So Bob Goodenow resigned as the NHL Players Association president. He sort of resigned the same way Sadam Hussein "resigned" as president of Iraq. It gets a little tough to govern effectively when you have tons of people hanging around that want to kill you. But I won't be one to dance on Goodenow's grave. As Al Morganti pointed out on WIP radio it was Goodenow that got the NHL players the disproportionately high salaries in the first place. So if you're someone like Jaromir Jagr, who came into the NHL almost at the same time Goodenow did, all you know is making these insane salaries. And if you're someone like Steve Yzerman who came into the league in 1983 making less the $50,000 a year and the next thing you know you're making more than three times that amount of money every week under Goodenow's leadership you may tend to think the guy is a hero.

- Line of the week. From New York Daily News columnist Mike Lupica on ESPN's The Sports Reporters regarding Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy : "A quick question about the defensive guru Tony Dungy....when exactly is he going to start guru-ing?"

- The NHL draft happened last Saturday. The Flyers picked 18 year old Steve Downie who played for the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League. Do you know what makes him a special player? Ahhhhhh....that's not a rhetorical question because I have no idea. I've never seen him play, but he plays right wing I know that much. You think the other sports have drafts that are a total crap shoot; In the NHL every pick you make is of an 18 year old kid or in a lot of cases even younger. So it's just a throw a dart at a name and hope for the best type of thing.

- From the "God I wish I was a judge for one day!!" file. Mark Downs, a North Union Township, Pa. t-ball coach, is charged with offering to pay 8 year old Keith Reese $25 to hit mentally disabled teammate Harry Bowers with a baseball in the face. The confused Reese actually hit Bowers twice before the game, once in the groin and once in the ear, before Downs told Bowers' mother that he should probably sit out the game because "the balls must be after (your son)". I swear on my life if Downs was convicted and I was the sentencing judge I would put him in jail for 2 years.

- From the world of Bada Boom Racing Stables.....Velocious was gelded over the weekend and after he recovers (approximately 10 days) he'll go to the thoroughbred retirement home in New York. The search for another horse continues. There is a very good chance that Clemente will run again on the turf next Monday. It'll be the most important race in Bada Boom Racing's history because if Clemente has a strong showing then we're going to nominate him for a stakes race at Penn National Race Track in Harrisburg, Pa. That means Clemente would be running against the top horses in the area for a lot of dough. If Clemente does do well next Monday he'll have a pretty good chance of getting in the stakes race by virtue of the fact that he was bred in Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania bred horses get priority when putting together races in Pennsylvania. I'll keep you posted in the next issue of MMM.
